Następca DVD nosi nazwę HD DVD, a filmy w tym formacie stają się coraz popularniejsze. Portal INTERIA.PL jako pierwszy w Polsce zdobył informację o jesiennej ofensywnie HD DVD.

Przez ostanie miesiące skrót HD zrobił prawdziwą karierę. Jeszcze rok temu niewiele osób myślało o przejściu ze standardowego obrazu do High Definition. Wraz ze spadkiem cen telewizorów cyfrowych, wzrosło także zainteresowanie nową generacją obrazu. Jednak, kiedy obecna oferta platform cyfrowych pozostawia wiele do życzenia, a gry wideo nas nie interesują, pozostaje zwrócić się do nowej generacji formatów zapisu danych - Blu-ray i HD DVD. Portal INTERIA.PL miał szansę poznać jesienne plany HD DVD.

HD DVD, jako nowości technologiczne, od pierwszego momentu miał być bezpośrednim następcą formatu DVD. Decyzja o jego wprowadzeniu na rynek zapadła 19 listopada 2003, podczas spotkania firm należących do organizacji standaryzacyjnej DVD Forum (stowarzyszenie producentów, twórców i dystrybutorów formatu DVD). Wtedy także wybrano nazwę dla nowego formatu - HD Digital Versalite Disc, zastępując pierwszą sugerowaną nazwę, czyli Advanced Optical Disc (AOD). Architektami następcy DVD została Toshiba i NEC.

Kolejny krok po CD i DVD miał stanowić nośnik do zapisu danych zarówno na potrzeby komputerów, jak i nowinki techniczne dla branży filmowej (w perspektywie także przemysłu elektronicznej rozrywki). Nowe płyty miały zagwarantować większą pojemność, a co za tym idzie - szansę na umieszczenie znacznie większej ilości danych. Standardowa płyta HD DVD ma pojemność 15 gigabajtów (płyta jednowarstwowa). Dalej mamy płytą mogącą pochwalić się ilością 30 gigabajtów (płyta dwuwarstwowa). Największą objętość mają płyty czterowarstwowe (60 gigabajtów).

Dla porównania - na płycie DVD może zmieścić się 4,7 gigabajtów (płyta jednowarstwowa) albo 9 gigabajtów (płyta dwuwarstwowa). Nowe technologie takie jak nośniki nowej generacji dają spore pole do manewru - trzeba je tylko umiejętnie wykorzystać.
